What styles of music help you write?

I personally listen to electronic ambient, techno, downtempo, hip-hop, trip-hop, or jazz when I write.

    What about all of you?

I've heard some of his stuff. I liked what I heard. Truthfully I think my first time hearing him was a progressive house remix of Mad World (From Donnie Darko). Then I heard the original, which is obviously better. I should go listen to more of his music.

I never knew it was a cover

On another note, I just noticed that my thread is called "Why styles of music help you write" but it's supposed to be "What styles of music help you write."

    We can fix that.

Music to court the writing muse:
For writing my own blog stuff - the blues.
For writing business blog stuff - classic rock ('70s-'80s) works best for me.
For planning what I'm going to write next week - classical or traditional folk.
For copy-editing - back to some hard-driving classic rock.
For writing letters to friends - the genre depends on who I'm writing to, and why!

    Music that doesn't intrude.

Hence maybe instrumental. Piano or violin. Also old favourites whose word I remember too well to care for anymore.

Music is a big help (thought I should add).

I agree. Usually music with words distracts my writing. That's why ambient and down tempo are a popular picks for me.

When the writing is going well, usually I slip into a hyper-focussed state where the songs just run along in the background of my mind. No problem; the lyrics can't compete.

But on other days, when writing comes hard, the absolute best for that is some Brazilian popular music that Gui turned me on to. Fabulous music, I love listening to it and that's what dominates the mp3 player I take hiking -- but as I can't understand more than a few words of Portuguese, that leaves lots of brain-space for my own words & ideas to play!
