If my calculator is correct, $15 for a 400-word post is less than a penny-per-word. Now, I'm sure there will be someone out there willing to work for nothing simply to get his or her name in print, but as the saying goes: you get what you pay for.

I don't mean to come off harsh, but until companies hiring bloggers see bloggers as professionals and until bloggers take themselves professionally, neither employer nor employee will get what they want.

Digital Ink, I totally agree. The rate per word for online vs. print (speaking generally) is still atrocious. It will be interesting to see what's happening in a few years' time, though.

I agree. I don't understand why there is this expectation that online writers will write for dirt cheap. I suppose it's because many of them do.

I remember looking at freelance writing jobs recently, and most of the ones that were for online writing were offering terrible rates. There were more than a few that were wanting 30+ articles written for a price of something like $10.

I suspect that those jobs were unethical SEOs looking for spammy, keyword-rich content, and were likely trying to outsource to countries that would provide cheap labour. But, still, 30+ articles of 500 words each, for only $10? Show some respect for the writers you're trying to hire (this comment isn't supposed to be a swipe at khalid, although I do think that he should pay a hirer rate, if he can afford to).

It all depends on the blog, the blogger and the fringe benefits. For example I don't earn a penny for my posts at copyblogger. Would you say that is a good gig or a bad one?

I do know that $10-$30 a post is not an unusual fee for lower-experienced bloggers. The amount of research I agree is a massive impact on if you see it as worthwhile. Some topics I can write with little research, just basic fact and link hunting, others it takes me hours just to work up a post topic. This is why I tend to work on monthly retainer rather than per-post.

Yes, I do contracted blogging, and if I did a per-post deal I would hope for way more than the starting offer but without knowing what the deal goes up to we don't know enough to dismiss it.

Inspired by this thread I have written a post on freelance blogging, would love your feedback on it

  7. Excellent post Chris.

Here is the issue with the rates for blogging. It really all depends on how much the client is willing to pay. Unfortunately, too many clients want to pay less than $30 per post. And these are the generous ones. I am not going to talk about the ones who are looking to pay $5 per post because I think that is laughable. That of course limits how much we can pay our writers.

But like Chris said, it all depends on experience. Some of our top writers can make up words of $100 per post.

  8. I expanded on the discussion of how much a blogger should get paid in this blog entry:

How much should you pay for a freelance blogger

    I would appreciate any feedback.

I was surprised to learn that Khalid pays so well.

Don't get me wrong, but blogging won't get you rich unless you blog for yourself and are an A-Lister.

I wrote an article titled, Close Encounter With A Network Blogging Opportunity, outlining my experience with one well known blogging outfit who wanted to pay me what amounted to be $2 per article. Talk about being insulted!

Although I won't look closer at Khalid's offer, it is a lot better than what I have seen. I think it could be a good deal for a newbie or hobbyist blogger.

In some parts of the world, $15 is decent money.
