    Site Map

    I wasn't sure if I should post this in the tread about my adventures migrating my site from Blogger to WP, but....

    Another newbie alert here....this time about Site Maps.

    On my site, there is a link at the bottom called.....yep, Site Map.

    When I click on it, I get that 404 error page.

    So:

    1. Is there a WP function / option that I need to select to start the site map feature?
    2. Or, is there a WP plug-in that I need to first download to activate the site map feature? and if so, which one do y'all mentors of mine suggest?
    3. I recall somewhere about one has to tell the different search engines that I have a site map......if that is correct, where and how do I do that for the majors (Google, Yahoo, Whoopee (OK, OK. .....there is no search engine called Whoopee....my wierd sense of frustrated humour felt like it was a word that belonged with Google and Yahoo ),

    Thank you in advance!

    From the Cutline Support Forums:
    Cutline Sitemap
    In fact, here are all the discussions about it:
    Tags/Sitemap
    Have at it, my friend.

    P.S.
    There are also two plugins for sitemap generation. One is Google Sitemap Generator and the other is Dagon Design Sitemap Generator. I use both, as one is for search engines, and the other is for human eyes.
    if ($link == "me")
    {
    echo "http://lighthouse-news.com";
    }

    I too use these plugins, and consider them essential. There was a measureable difference in (a) search engine traffic and (b) page views per visit, almost immediately after installing these. Don't forget to submit your sitemap to Google etc. for crawling - the speed with which a blog's listings get updated in the BigG from an xml sitemap really can be just staggering.

    OK, OK......that sound you hear is me.....slapping myself silly.......ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch!

    I just loaded the Google sitemap generator and executed it and see that this plugin notifies them for me.

    So, how do I know / how can I check that this actually worked and that Google, Ask.me, and others now have my site map?

    Thank you ......................ouch! ouch! ouch! ouch!

    You should still go here:
    https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

    and register your sitemap. This will allow you to see the stats about your site like how many pages are getting indexed and internal and external linking.

    It also provides a way for Google to contact you if there is an issue with your site.

  7. You might also want to note that they tend to lag behind on their information a bit, too. It might be in the index, but changes and such not show up in Webmaster tools for several days afterwards, so be patient.

    I see. I went there earlier today as well as to Yahoo. I forget which, but I think it was Yahoo which had a few sentences that it could take several weeks or more before they used the site map.

    Oh, well.

    Thank you very much for your replies.

    As like others advice better use plugins dude. That will help you build your sitemap automatically and ping the sitemap services to read your sitemap.xml file.

    I use Google (XML) Sitemaps Generator for WordPress . This is a cool plug in which allows to generate sitemap, view it, set the priorities of pages so that the bots reads accordingly.

    Also provides a list of Sitemap services that you should subscribe too.
    This plugin is very handy!!

    Thanks, man. I think that is the one I ended up adding but don't recall a page priority feature. I'll have to go back.

    Thanks,
